WEEKEND GUIDE

Here's a handy guide to what's opening today in a theater near you!

The Predator

I guess it's that time again. We can't seem to make it more than a few years without an Alien or a Predator film infiltrating the multiplexes. Shane Black(Iron Man 3, The Nice Guys) has been tagged to direct this time out, and seeing as he was one of the stars of the original 1987 film, it feels like an appropriate choice. The Predator has its work cut out for it amidst loads of bad press stemming from star Olivia Munn blowing the whistle on a sex offender involved in the film and her subsequent shunning from cast and crew. No Bueno. Are you interested in more Predator action? Judging by the trailer, it looks silly as hell. Almost as if it's so tongue in cheek, that it's become a comedy? And I see the Predator dogs are back. So there's that.

A Simple Favor

I love Paul Feig(Freaks And Feels, The Office, Bridesmaids). After a couple of decades skillfully maneuvering the comedic world, the writer/director has decided to take a stab at the thriller genre with A Simple Favor. Anna Kendrick stars as mommy blogger Stephanie, who ends up making friends with the sleek and stylish high society Emily(Blake Lively) after their children hit it off on a playdate. When Emily mysteriously goes missing, Stephanie teams up with Emily's husband to uncover the truth. A Simple Favor is getting great early reviews, and I'd love to see how Paul Feig handles suspense. Plus, you don't need to give me much excuse to look at Blake Lively.

White Boy Rick

If you don't know much about this one, I don't want to spoil too much of the plot here. White Boy Rick is based on a true story set in 1980s Detroit following a working class father(Matthew McConaughey) and his teenage son(newcomer Richie Merritt), who became an undercover police informant and eventual drug dealer. I've read a lot about the story just for the sake of writing this little blurb, and I must say...the trailer does a great job of making a story so sad look like such a fun time.
