WEEKEND GUIDE DECEMBER 2018

Here's a handy guide to what's opening today in a theater near you!

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

A handful of critics that I trust all have pretty much the same thing to say about Into The Spider-verse: Not only is it the best animated movie of the year, but it's also the best Spider-Man movie to date. That is high praise for a film that many people were not aware existed until now. This film centers on the Miles Morales version of Spidey as he gets sucked into a dimension with dozens of other webslingers from the pages of Marvel Comics as they join forces to fight evil. Spider-Man is my favorite Marvel hero next to The Punisher, so I am all in. And bonus points for having the guts to put the multiracial Morales front and center.

Mortal Engines

On the other side of the coin, we have Mortal Engines. Billed as being from the minds of those that brought you The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, make no mistake. Peter Jackson did not direct this. I'm in the great minority of those that doesn't like LOTR, so I'm guessing that I'm not the target demographic here, but I've gotta say that this looks abysmal. Watching the trailer evoked memories of Waterworld for me. That can't be what you want. In a post apocalyptic future, all cities are now mobile and roving the deserts trying to attack each other for fuel and resources and dominance. Some of the effects were quite beautiful, I'll give it that. However, the visuals in LOTR were also stunning, bookended by hours of walking and talking. I've learned my lesson. Hard pass.

The Mule

Clint Eastwood is 88 years old. 88! It astounds me that he still has the energy to not only make movies, but to star in them as well. I wish someone could coax Gene Hackman out of retirement for one last hurrah, but I digress. Not only is Clint still making movies, but he still makes damn good ones, and The Mule looks to be no exception. Eastwood stars as Earl Stone, a lonely man who needs money to save his business. He unknowingly takes a job as a driver for the Mexican drug cartel and does such a good job that they won't let him out. Will he deal out some Eastwood justice? Probably. Either way, this one sounds intriguing.
